With lockdown in full swing, here are a few favourites from the last weeks of October, which just made it in before everything shut down. It’s been a great chance to look back, even if it has made me miss being able to soak up the Munich vibes in cafes and restaurants. Fingers crossed I’ll be back out in December, but for now I’m appreciating different aspects of the city, and do not fear, lockdown finds are still to come.
Prinz Myshkin (take two)
After an underwhelming experience in the summer, a return to this very central vegetarian and vegan restaurant redeemed it somewhat. Sadly their Mittagsangebot was sold out, but the atmosphere indoors was really very nice, and they have a great selection of interesting dishes. It’s still not cheap, but there are some affordable dishes, and their daily lunchtime offer is exceptional value at 8,50. A bit more of a luxury than an everyday place, but definitely worth having on the list.
Max Pett
Another place which had made it onto the list from my research into best veggie and vegan places to eat in Munich, this entirely vegan restaurant is tucked away near Sendlinger Tor. The vibes are very cool and the menu was really creative. I couldn’t resist the vegan schnitzel, which really was very tasty, and absolutely huge. Again, not cheap, but worth it to be supporting a vegan venture with some real quality food.
Soul Kitchen
This was definitely the best pizza I’ve had while I’ve been here, and potentially one of the best ever. Quick cooking at a high temperature made for a pillowy crust, lightly salted and puffy with a bit of chew, a menu with plenty of variety, classics and newbies, and the vegan toppings of the Purple Rain were actually insane - who would have thought hummus works on a pizza? Top marks for style, and for substance, this one was definitely a winner.
60 secondi
It’s a shame I had this pizza after Soul Kitchen, because it unfortunately doesn’t top the list, but with a similar style of puffy sourdough crusts, and some more classic toppings, not exceptionally vegan friendly but easily adapted (who needs cheese when you have good tomato sauce and lots of it?), there really was much to be happy about, and the location just off Münchner Freiheit makes it really very convenient. This time enjoyed as a takeaway, the restaurant itself has great vibes and is always packed on a Saturday night.
Zeitgeist
The last place I managed to visit before lockdown was well chosen: good (if not mind-boggling) food, and exceptional vibes. The brunch menu is a real crowd pleaser, which was obvious from how packed the place was, everything is presented in style, and, unsurprisingly given its central location in Maxvorstadt, it somehow just feels like the place to be.
